As most Charleston drivers know, when operating a vehicle, the best way to ensure your safety and the safety of others to be vigilant. Keeping your eyes on the road, being aware of your surroundings and avoiding distraction can all go a long way toward keeping our roads accident-free. Not all drivers, however, do a good job of this.
A week ago, a three-car crash backed up traffic on Interstate 64 in Charleston. According to a report from News Channel 3, the driver of an SUV braked suddenly to avoid colliding with slowed traffic. While the SUV stopped in time, the cars behind it could not.
The vehicle directly behind the SUV crashed into the back of it, and a third car collided with the second vehicle. It's not clear if anyone was injured in the collision, but the middle car sustained severe damage and needed to be towed off the highway.
This accident clearly illustrates the importance of vigilance while driving. While we don't know the exact circumstances of this car accident, all too often distraction is the cause of a crash like this one. When drivers take their eyes off the road in heavy traffic, whether to send a text or pick up something that fell on the floor, a crash can occur.
Fortunately, when an accident is clearly another driver's fault, an injured victim can seek compensation through a personal injury lawsuit. No one should be forced to pay expensive medical bills when another driver caused an accident.
