The potential dangers of driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol are well-publicized in an attempt to deter such behavior. Unfortunately, drivers in West Virginia and across the country continue to drive after consuming such substances, often causing serious injuries to the innocent people with whom they come into contact. For example, police believe the driver they say caused a fatal car wreck was under the influence at the time.
The accident happened on a major interstate one day in mid-June. According to police reports, a car driven by a 23-year-old male struck the side of a tractor-trailer. The driver then lost control of his vehicle. Other cars in the area slowed to avoid the accident, causing additional collisions.
Police say that the incident ultimately involved 14 passenger vehicles and two tractor-trailers. A 24-year-old man died as a result. Thirteen people were transported to area hospitals for treatment. The extent of their injuries and current conditions are unclear. The driver of the car police believed caused the accident now faces criminal charges.
Unfortunately, there are likely many families impacted that this fatal car wreck. While they work to put their lives back together as they recover from their injuries or grieve the unexpected loss of their loved one, they may face financial burdens. To help cope with funeral expenses and/or lost wages, many who have been seriously injured or lost a loved one due to another's negligence in West Virginia have filed a lawsuit. Those who successfully present their case often receive an award of damages to help alleviate the financial burdens created by their loss.
