Is surgery required to treat a brain injury?

In the event that you or a loved one suffers a brain injury, it's important to understand the treatment and recovery process.

Even though no two people are the same, there are a variety of steps that medical professionals will take to give the injured party the best possible chance of making a full recovery.

Surgery is not required to treat every type of brain injury, but this does come into play from time to time.

Here are several ways surgery can be used to address a brain injury:

-- To repair a skull fracture. If a part of the skull was fractured, surgery may be required to repair the area (or remove fragments) and prevent additional damage.

-- Removing a blood clot. Bleeding within or outside the brain is a serious problem that must be dealt with in a timely manner. If blood collects around the brain, it can lead to increased pressure with the chance of serious injury or even death.

-- To relieve pressure. There are times when pressure inside the skull needs to be relieved. In this case, surgery is often the best option.

The only way to know if surgery is the best treatment for a brain injury is to be examined by an experienced medical professional. This is why it's so important to seek immediate attention following an accident.

Once the recovery process begins, don't hesitate to learn more about your legal rights. You may be able to receive compensation for your injuries and treatment by filing a lawsuit against the negligent party.
