Prepping your college kid's car for the fall semester

Is your child headed off to college this fall and taking his or her car? If so, it's already time to get a few things checked out so that your son or daughter is safe on the road this fall.

Here are three important things to check:

1. Tires

Nothing can lead to an accident on the road faster than a blown tire. You need to make sure that you son's or daughter's car has solid all-weather tires on them with a decent tread. The leaves will be hitting the road soon and a poor tread can send a car spinning when the tires won't catch.

It's also important to check the tires for proper inflation -- the hot days at the end of summer can cause a blowout if a tire is over-inflated. An under-inflated tire can be a problem when the car is loaded down with everything your child plans to pack into his or her dorm room.

2. Brakes

If you haven't checked the brakes on the car your child is taking to school since spring, it's time to do it again. Worn plates need to be replaced and all the lines should be checked for fraying. If the brakes seem to need an extra push to be effective, that's not something you want when there are wet leaves on the ground -- get your mechanic to tighten the brakes so that the response time is optimal.

3. Alignment

Proper wheel alignment is a feature that many people overlook because they don't realize exactly how important it is to their safety. A properly aligned vehicle is easier to steer -- which can provide critical seconds that help avoid a sudden danger in the road. Improper alignment also affects how the tires wear, leading to uneven treads and dangerous conditions for the driver.

Don't let your son or daughter head off to school without the proper safety inspections and tune-ups for his or her car. That's the best way to ensure his or her safety out there on the road. If your son or daughter is in an accident due to someone else's negligence, consider talking to an attorney about how to receive fair compensation for any injuries, lost time at school and other losses.
