An alleged drugged driver strikes a St. Albans delivery driver

An alleged drugged driver was involved in a two-car accident on Friday, Nov. 24, that seriously injured a driver who was making a delivery for a local pizza chain when the crash occurred.

The incident occurred just before 6:30 p.m. at the intersection of 8th Street and Kanawha Terrace in St. Albans. According to witnesses, the 33-year-old Tazewell man, believed to have been responsible for causing the crash, struck the woman head-on.

When emergency crews arrived at the crash scene, they found the woman trapped in her car, yet still alert. They had to use a Jaws of Life to cut her out of her vehicle. Although it's unclear what type of injuries the woman suffered, they've been described as being serious.

After the woman was extricated from her mangled vehicle, officers turned their attention to the man believed to have caused the crash. They first subjected him to field sobriety testing. He reportedly failed it. Then, in interviewing the man, he reportedly readily admitted to having consumed drugs immediately prior to the crash.

It's this reported admission that led to the man being arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence (DUI) with bodily injury charges. As of Nov. 25, the man was still being held at South Central Regional Jail. Bond has been set in his case at $5,000.

Motorists who are either drunk or drugged are often so impaired in their decision-making abilities that they fail to stay within their lanes or run red lights or stop signs. It's when these types of events occur that it's more likely that a crash involving serious injuries or fatalities will occur. If you've been critically injured in a collision in Kanawha County, then a Charleston, West Virginia, attorney can provide guidance in your case.
