At risk of wandering: Nursing homes have to monitor patients

Approximately six out of every 10 people with dementia may wander as a result of their condition. These individuals may not know where they are or could even be in a disoriented dream state in which they believe they are somewhere they are not. They may not remember their names, be unable to remember where they live or stay and may not have any information on how to get into contact with someone who can help.

It's extremely dangerous for people with Alzheimer's disease or dementia to go anywhere without strict supervision. Wandering is dangerous for these individuals, because it's easy for them to get lost and for them to go without care, since they may not remember that they need assistance.

Anyone who has memory problems could be a wandering risk. You can recognize the symptoms of a potential wanderer if he or she talks about wanting to go home despite being at home, has trouble finding the restroom in his or her own familiar settings, asks about where certain people are when they are present or begins to return from regular drives or walks later than usual. These are all signs that a person is beginning to have trouble with memory and may need additional monitoring for his or her safety.

In a nursing facility, it's absolutely vital that the team takes care of patients who could wander and monitors their whereabouts. Our website has more on nursing homes and what they should be doing to take care of your loved one. If your loved one gets hurt, you may have a chance to make a claim.
