How can you remain safe when traffic picks up?

As a driver, there is no better feeling than being one of the few people on the road. This doesn't mean you can stop paying attention, but it can relieve some of your stress and anxiety.

Conversely, it can be a challenge to drive when traffic begins to build around you. This is something you may go through every day, such as during the morning and evening rush hours.

Here are some of the many steps you can take to remain safe when traffic picks up:

  • Leave yourself more time to reach your destination. You don't want to find yourself in traffic and late for work, as this will only make you more anxious.
  • Leave more space between the car in front of you. There's no good reason to tailgate, even when traffic is moving slowly. Leave an extra car length, and you'll be surprised at how this eases your tension.
  • Ignore distractions. From texting to talking on the phone to grabbing a bite to eat, you don't want to fall prey to any distraction when driving at rush hour (or any other time).
  • Stay where you are. Jumping from lane to lane won't get you to your destination faster. Instead, it increases the likelihood of being part of an accident.

Should you find yourself involved in an accident, move your car to the side of the road if possible. Depending on your situation, such as if you have any injuries, you may need to stay in your vehicle until police and an ambulance arrive.

Once you receive treatment, it's your legal right to learn more about the accident and determine whether you can seek compensation from the negligent party.
