Why do drivers strike pedestrians?

As a pedestrian, you should always keep a close eye on the vehicles traveling around you. When you're aware of your surroundings, it's much easier to avoid a serious situation, such as one in which you are struck by a car.

Unfortunately, you can only do so much to keep yourself safe. If a driver makes a mistake, you could still find yourself in a very bad situation.

Here are some of the top causes of a car-pedestrian accident:

  • Distracted driving, such as when a person is texting when driving on crowded city roads
  • Speeding
  • Failing to stop at a stop sign or traffic signal
  • Failing to yield to pedestrians at crosswalks
  • Disregard for traffic and/or weather conditions, such as heavy rain
  • Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • Drowsy driving

As a pedestrian, it's hard to know if a driver will make a mistake. For example, from where you're walking, it's almost impossible to know if a person is texting or driving under the influence of alcohol. Subsequently, there's not much you can do to prevent trouble.

If you're ever struck by a motor vehicle, there's a good chance you'll suffer some type of serious injury. This is why you should stay where you are and wait for help to arrive at the scene. At this point, there is nothing more important than receiving immediate treatment.

Once you understand your injuries, turn your focus to the cause of the accident and your legal rights as a pedestrian. You may be able to seek compensation from the negligent party, which can help improve your life.
