Do these things to drive safely in a spring rainstorm

In West Virginia, the spring season is one of the best times of the year. From the weather to the emergence of the leaves, you're sure to enjoy everything about these months.

Unfortunately, the spring season also has the potential to bring quite a few rainstorms to the area.

If you find yourself behind the wheel when the rain begins to fall, here are some tips to follow:

  • Slow down: Wet conditions can make it difficult to see and a challenge to stop your vehicle in a timely manner. By slowing down, you decrease the risk of being part of an accident.
  • Use your headlights: Not only does this help you see the road ahead, which includes any obstacles, but it allows other drivers to better spot your vehicle.
  • Watch for standing water: It's easier said than done, but you don't want to hit standing water at a fast rate of speed. If you do this, it could result in hydroplaning, a top cause of accidents in wet weather.
  • Pull over if you can't see: If the rain is so hard that you're unable to see the road ahead, pull over and wait for conditions to improve. It's better to be safe than sorry.

If you're lucky, you'll never find yourself driving too often in heavy rain. However, this will probably happen to you every now and again.

In the event of an accident, call 911 and wait for help to arrive. From there, receive medical treatment, contact your insurance company and learn more about your legal rights.
