A rear-end collision can result in whiplash

As a driver, you don't have any control over the decisions that other people make. Fortunately, there are often things you can do to remove yourself from a dangerous situation (such as letting a driver pass on the highway).

The bad thing about a rear-end collision is that you can't do much to prevent trouble. For example, if you're sitting at a stop light and see a driver speeding up on you from behind, there's typically no way (or time) to get out of the way.

A rear-end collision can result in many injuries, including whiplash. This occurs when the force of an accident causes your head to snap forward and backward. Some of the most common symptoms associated with whiplash include:

  • Worsening pain when you attempt to move your neck
  • Stiffness
  • Loss of range of motion
  • Numbness or tingling that reaches your arms
  • Headaches
  • Pain in the arms, back or shoulder areas
  • Fatigue
  • Dizziness

There are other symptoms that are less common but every bit as serious:

  • Blurred vision
  • Irritability
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Memory difficulties
  • Depression

Since the symptoms of whiplash are so serious, it's critical to receive immediate medical attention. Don't assume that rest is all you need to treat your injury, as this isn't typically the case with whiplash.

After you seek medical care, you'll have a better understanding of your injuries, prognosis and the best form of treatment. From there, you can contact your insurance company, learn more about your policy and review the police report. Doing these things will help you take steps to hold the negligent party responsible for their actions.
